LED Display Facts
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device. You can see it as an electronic device that permits current to flow in One direction. And it illuminates when electricity passes through it. It is typical that LED’s expected life is 100,000 hours.
Above is an example of what an SMD that is a single RGB LED. RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue. RGB are the colors that makes it possible to create the 281 Trillion shades of colors that a Full Color LED Display can provide.
A pixel is a point of light and the smallest element of an LED display. An LED display is manufactured by an array of pixels. Pixels are capable to present letters, graphics, animations and videos. The smaller the pixels, the better and crisper the images and videos will look.
A pixel can be one LED, or a cluster of LED’s to create one pixel. And it can be either the older technology of DIP LEDs or using the better technology of SMDs.
You can Go Here and find out the difference between DIPs and SMDs and you will soon find out why you will only want an LED Display that is SMD.
Above is an example of the older full color DIP technology which uses a cluster of three LED’s using the colors Red, Blue and Green pixels.
FYI: We do provide a 10mm grayscale LED Display which is SMD technology and provides a quantity of 256 shades of one color such as Amber, Red, Green, Blue, etc...
Monochrome LED Displays typically provide you with around 27 shades of one color.
Pitch is a terminology to determine the resolution of the LED display.
The smaller the pitch size, the higher picture resolution will be represented because of more pixels per area. On the contrary, the bigger pitch size, because of less pixels, will represent lower picture resolution.
Depending on the 'job' you want your LED Display to do, will determine the size of the pitch.
Nit is a unit to measure luminance over a square meter. It is also well-known as meter-lamberts.
NIT = meter-lamberts = candela per square meter (cd/m2).
As you are aware, during the nights, LED Displays shine bright and clear; sometimes too bright and need to be dimmed.
Also, during the day the sun may wash out the LED Display; during this time, your LED Display should be the brightest.
So for either situation, to ensure this, our LED Displays have an auto dimming and also a manual dimming capability. Getting your message out there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
Master / Slave refers to a display’s configuration. One side, the “Master”, acts as the display’s main control center and relays messages to the “Slave” side of the display.
When a display is shipped as a “Master / Slave”, it contains two single sided displays that are configured to work as one.
You can also have other configurations such as Master / Master; Master / Master / Slave; Master / Slave / Slave and so on. The choice is yours.
An LED display’s matrix resolution represents how many pixels there is on the display. A display with a matrix resolution of 320 (h) by 480 (w) means it has 480 pixels from side to side and 320 from top to bottom.
The higher the matrix resolution is, the better an image is represented on the display. As we discussed earlier, for a fixed display area, selecting a smaller pitch will increase the matrix resolution of the display which means better image quality.

“For business that choose to enhance their signage with an electronic message display, the owners typically see an increase in business of 15% to 150%.” United States Small Business Administration on Signage for business.
Monochrome Displays enables shades of a single color in Red or in Amber. They only provide, typically, about 28 shades of one color. This is very limiting.
Grayscale Displays, portrays the different intensity of a color ranging from the intensity black to the intensity white.
Grayscale display enables 256 different levels of shades. If you are looking for more color shades available display, grayscale type of display is the ideal one you would like to try.
Full Color Displays, also called RBG for Red, Blue Green, enables to produce a complex array of colors - 281 Trillion shades of colors typically.
If you are looking for LED display that is capable of playing videos or slideshows to enhance your advertising tools previously only available on TV, RGB display is the ideal one you would like to try.
SMD Technology provides a better solution for no matter which color configuration you are after.
The distance between your sign and its viewers is the number one factor in determining the type of LED display you will need. Longer distances require less resolution and shorter distances require higher resolutions.
In addition, if you are traveling at 55 MPH on a freeway, and the sign is 600 feet away at a truck stop, the text letters must be at least 20 inches tall to be legible.
Likewise, if you are standing 60 feet away from a street level sign, the letters need only be two inches tall to be legible. The rule of thumb is that you need 1 inch for every 30 feet of viewing distance.
Viewing angle is the range that LED display achieves its widest visual performance. SMD LED displays’ average viewing angel is 140° (Horizontal) x 140° (Vertical).
Viewing distance is the estimated distance that LED display achieves its farthest visual performance.
Diodes can put out a single, narrow beam of light like a flashlight, or they can output a wide array across a room like a light bulb.
Diodes output about the same amount of light no matter what type they are – but the “high-beam” diodes with a narrow angle focus more light into one small spot, whereas the “wide angle” diodes spread their light across the horizon.
So, if you were to stand in front of a sign made from “high-beams” diodes with narrow viewing angles, you would see an extremely bright sign if you stood directly in front of it, but the minute you walked away from the small spot light of its focus, you would see nothing but black.
With wide viewing angle LEDs, the image is visible in consistent brightness and uniform colors throughout the entire viewing range of the display. It is important to make sure that you know what LED diode density is being used.
In addition to the discussion of viewing distances, it is important to know that at least seven rows of diodes are required to make one text character.
For multiple lines of text, it requires an eighth line as a separator. This means that for each line of text there needs to be eight rows of pixels, and that those eight rows together measure the required character height.
Louver design is an idea to reduce the waste of LED brightness while against the sunlight. Some products in the market only offer One louver per pixel.
The LED light output performs the best brightness, the strongest contrast, and the widest viewing angle and distance in the most energy-efficient mode when it has the proper louver design.
